History
Recent events have demonstrated that the promise of public health for all should
be directed towards making efforts that will enhance and promote human
potentials and discourage factors, which inhibit those potentials. A review of
current literature has indicated that providing illness prevention/health
promotion programs to communities of differing cultures and ethnic backgrounds
can be difficult and challenging, and yet, rewarding. There is a need to bridge
the gap that exists between the availability of health information to American
minority groups and that, which is available to the American majority groups.
At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), we have taken steps to
provide the University community and the general public, a means to access
health related information pertinent to a number of different cultural groups;
African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanics, Native-Americans, Women, people
who are physically challenged, gay/lesbians and Internationals. The mechanics of
providing such information is done through the MCHCH web site. Its creation was
initiated and is maintained by two units of the UIUC Student Affairs Office -
McKinley Health Center and the Office of Minority Student Affairs. The
multi-cultural web site, is accessed by thousands of students, faculty and the
general public, mostly to obtain basic health information or for research
purposes.
The key components of the web site include; health information on various
populations/ethnic groups, translated health materials in Arabic, Chinese,
French, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. Also provided are
sections about UIUC resources, health information index, students' newsletter
and links to organizations such as WHO and CDC.
In summary, this web site is designed to provide information on minority health
and links to various health resources including; national/international health
organizations, literature reviews and data/statistics on some specific health
issues. The site strives to bring information on basic health concerns to the
general public, minority populations, to those concerned with their well being
and for research purposes.
